  • We were staying nearby and while at the shopping centre we visited this fabulous owl sanctuary. It was gone closing time but we were still welcomed in by Malcolm and all the other volunteers, and we got to see feeding time and hold one of the owls, and shown all the other birds and animals that they look after there. It was so brilliant that we came back again the following day, and we got to hold an array of owls, and chatted with the volunteers that are so friendly, informative, and passionate about what they do there.
I would highly recommend a visit here. The sanctuary doesn't charge for entry, but it's definitely worth putting a few pound in the collection tin, or buying a bookmark or 2, all for a great cause.

  • Planning on visiting your sanctury today, 19/08/12 and having looked at your web site, i could'nt find any info about opening times? It would be helpfull to add this to the site. Hopefully, when we get to you later today, you will be open.

  • My partner and I visited the owl sanctuary 26/1/12 and had a thoroughly enjoyable and informative time. Our thanks must go to Malcolm and all staff who, without us asking, opened up a number of aviaries for us to photograph and, in some cases, handle a variety of the birds.

The birds all seemed very content and conditions were excellent with obvious signs of much ongoing work taking place to improve their environment even more. The dedication of all the volunteers was heartwarming to see and experience.

Still coming to terms with being able to handle the extremely impressive Eagle Owl and the adorable Barn Owls!

Will certainly be back again, soon we hope, and very much look forward to it. Thank you all once again

  • Today was the first time in 3 years I visited. I'm a photographer. I got some cracking pictures thanks to Malcolm and the staff who kindly let me in the viewing area. Well worth the visit.

  • Glad to know the Owl Sanctuary is still going. My mother and I visited often when I still lived in Wales and my mother left her collection of model owls to be displayed or sold if the sanctuary ever needed the funds. Hope you may long continue to fight off an ignorant and pedantic council and keep up the great work caring for these wonderful birds!

  • Yes I am disappointed by the decision made by Blaenau Gwent council to close the Owl Sanctuary, but also I would like to bring forward another event that Ebbw Vale had hosted, Garden Festival Wales.

I know 19 years is a long time for Ebbw Vale, and the wider community in South Wales to be without such a wonderful event but the sponsors and supporters should have gone the extra mile and found some way to raise money at the time during what was to be the last British Garden Festival.

What's more I am saddened that there is no sign or remainder of what the Garden Festival Wales was, except for a few sculptures and pieces of work such as the brick dragon, and the stairway to the stars that have either been shut or have now overgrown due to a lack of money and care, it's sad that people didn't care enough because this Garden Festival had potential and if they knew that and got in the money by fund-raising then it probably still be there for people to continue to enjoy the experience and today for the younger people of this area, and be a success.

  • This amazing place should be encouraged by the council and not shut down. There are not enough places like this, it is educational, it allows children to learn about these beautiful birds, cant wait to visit next time I am down in Wales.

  • We went to Abergavenny Steam Rally today and held an owl each, It was really fun holding the owl and you couldn't even feel much! We would love to do it again.
